Stents are implantable devices designed to serve as endoluminal scaffolds in the recanalization of occluded or structurally compromised vascular and nonvascular circulatory pathways in various organs and tissues of the human body.  Peripheral vascular applications for stenting include aortic aneurysm repair, carotid artery stenting, iliac artery stenting, femoropopliteal stenting, infrapopliteal stenting, renal artery stenting, and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunting.  In 2005, U.S. sales of peripheral vascular stents totaled approximately $918 million.  Over the forecast period covered by this report, this figure is expected to increase at a compound annual rate of 14%, reaching approximately $1.8 billion in the year 2010.
