Urinary incontinence (UI) afflicts more than 50 million people in the United States (U.S.) and Europe. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI), the most common form of UI, afflicts an estimated 2 million men in Europe, and is defined as involuntary urine loss during physical exertion (e.g., coughing, laughing, sneezing, lifting, and physical activity) coincident with an increase in intra-abdominal pressure in the absence of detrusor contraction or an overdistended bladder. In men, SUI most often occurs as a result of prostatectomy.

The only curative treatments for debilitating, chronic SUI due to damage from prostatectomy and/or radiotherapy include device-based compensating/corrective surgical or minimally invasive techniques, such as implantation of an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS), targeted injection of bulking agent implants (BAIs), and the minimally invasive implantation of a bone-anchored bulbourethral male sling (BAMS).

The European market (in the selected European countries) for AUS, BAI, BAMS surgical products for treating male SUI totaled an estimated $30.7 million in 2006, and is expected increase at a compound annual rate of approximately 8.3%, to more than $45.8 million in 2011. The largest relative and absolute growth in the European male SUI surgical therapy market can be expected in the BAMS segment, which is projected to gain more than 73% in procedure volumes and nearly 93% in product sales by the end of the forecast period. The AUS device segment is expected to remain a gold standard procedure for severe male SUI, experiencing continued moderate growth.
