European Markets for Urinary Stone Removal Devices and Equipment
Report #A453 - August 2008
234 Pages – 84 Exhibits – 10 Key Company Profiles

Kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract, affecting approximately 5%-7% of all women and 10%-12% of men. An estimated 5 million or more kidney stone cases are diagnosed annually worldwide, and an estimated 1 million diagnosed in Europe alone. The incidence of kidney stones is increasing; while reasons for the increase are unclear, it is believed the number of cases will increase significantly if the climate continues to warm.

While many people pass very small stones naturally, many patients must have them surgically removed upon the sudden onset of excruciating pain, and to lessen the risk of bleeding, infection, obstruction and kidney damage. Fortunately, several established minimally invasive stone removal procedures such as extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy, endoscopic/intracorporeal lithotripsy or percutaneous nephrolithotomy have virtually replaced open surgery, giving many patients less painful, highly effective treatment alternatives. Today, minimally invasive treatment may include the use of a variety of urinary stone access, disintegration and removal devices and equipment, which are the focus of this report.

The combined European market for minimally invasive urinary stone removal devices and equipment was valued at approximately $127 million in 2007. Sales of urinary stone removal products in Europe are expected to increase at a compound annual rate of approximately 3.0%, approaching nearly $150 million in the year 2011.

This dynamic, new report from Medtech Insight includes analyses of products, current and emerging markets, competitors, and opportunities in the European urinary stone removal devices and equipment market. Covered topics in this report include a discussion of the healthcare markets of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.K., and the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg); an overview of urinary stone disease and treatment; minimally invasive stone removal devices and equipment, including extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy systems, laser lithotripsy systems, electrohydraulic, pneumatic and ultrasonic lithotripsy systems, urinary tract access and stone retrieval systems, and ureteral stents; as well as a European market and competitive analysis.
