Opportunities in Men's Healthcare:  U.S. Markets for Therapeutic Urology Products
January 2005, 314 pages
Report #A455

Urology is a medical/surgical specialty involving the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic disorders of the urinary tract and male reproductive organs.

This report focuses on the therapeutic management of the most common non-oncologic conditions affecting male urology including:  benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), erectile dysfunction (ED), incontinence, prostatitis, and urinary calculus (stone) disease.  These conditions afflict a substantial population of men in the United States (U.S.)—the ED population alone is estimated at more than 30 million.  Unfortunately, most patients remain underserved and undertreated.  This is projected to change over the next five years due to greater patient awareness and the emergence of more effective, less-invasive therapies.  In particular, the largest population of “actively treated” male urology patients in the year 2008 will be ED patients, which will increase nearly 9% annually to an estimated 12 million.

In 2003, therapeutic urology products were employed in the management of more than 12.4 million male patients, generating an estimated $3.4 billion in total drug and device revenues.  Approximately 80% of sales were contributed by BPH and ED treatment products, followed by prostatitis drugs (11.5%), urinary stone removal systems (7.5%), and urinary stress incontinence surgical devices (less than 1.0%).

The total U.S. market for urologic therapy products is projected to grow approximately 8% per year from $3.4 billion in 2003 to a substantial market size of $4.9 billion in the year 2008.  The most significant gains are expected in the BPH and ED management product segments, based on the development of improved BPH-specific “combination” drugs, new and improved oral and transdermal ED drugs, and the accelerated patient migration to minimally invasive, less traumatic BPH thermotherapy.

This dynamic report from Medtech Insight includes analyses of pharmaceuticals, medical devices/disposables and equipment and presents competitors, current and forecast markets, and opportunities in the U.S. market for male therapeutic urology products.  Covered topics include BPH-specific drugs; electrosurgery disposables; minimally invasive thermotherapy systems; prostatic stents; ED drugs, erection-assist devices; penile implants; prostatitis drugs; extracorporeal and intracorporeal lithotripsy systems; ureteral stents; urinary tract access and stone retrieval devices; artificial urinary sphincters; injectable bulking agents, and male sling systems.

Methodology

Reports are produced exclusively by Medtech Insight, through extensive primary and secondary research among the clinicians, researchers, and competitors in the marketplace, and draw upon the industry expertise of a network of industry insiders. Medtech Insight exhaustively corroborates the data as a baseline for completing forward-looking analysis and providing insight into product, technology and market evolution.
