Neurological impairment encompasses a diverse range of progressive central nervous system disorders that often are associated with significant psychiatric morbidity and reduced quality of life. This report presents the prevalence and number of hospital discharges in the United States as well as the surgical procedure volumes for selected neurological diseases/disorders. Among the disorders covered by this report are Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, bipolar disorder, cerebral aneurysm, depression, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and stroke. Among the covered surgical procedures are cerebrospinal fluid shunting, carotid artery stenting, cerebral aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation clipping and embolization, and intracranial stenting.

Procedure volumes forecasts are for the years 2011-2017. Hospital discharges are for the years 1999-2009; disease prevalence figures (and incidence figures when available) are for the year 2011.
