Handheld Surgical Instruments Report: India
Report #CS211CH -
February 2014

India’s handheld surgical instruments market is fragmented but, driven by increasing healthcare spending, is exhibiting rapid growth.

The market for surgical instruments in India is very broad and highly fragmented consisting of many existing manufacturers and suppliers and covering numerous instrument types. This report focuses on the two main segments: handheld instruments (scissors, cutters, blades, scalpels, graspers) and electrosurgical generators and accessories (radiofrequency, monopolar and bipolar devices as well as advanced energy devices). The main characteristics and dynamics of the two segments are diverse with various different players and behaviours.

The handheld surgical instruments market in India is estimated to be worth more than USD $125 million, with the electrosurgical segment accounting for slightly more than half the market. While local competitors dominate the mechanical handheld instruments segment, they face more competition from multinational medical device companies in the electrosurgical instruments segment.

Both segments are expected to exhibit moderate growth driven by the Indian government’s plans to increase public health expenditure and healthcare provision, along with an upsurge in healthcare insurance. The government has increased the budget allocation to expand the rural health centre network that serves over 400 million Indians subsisting below the poverty line; however, despite the National Rural Health Mission which was initiated in 2005, the gap in access to healthcare remains large. The uneven access to healthcare, coupled with a shortage of trained surgeons, serves as a dampener on the growth of the handheld surgical instruments market.

This report provides a breakdown of the market sizes, highlights the market potential of handheld and electrosurgical devices in India, and profiles the leading local and multinational competitors in this market.
