China Surgical Procedure Volume 2011
Report #CS259CH -
February 2013

China Surgical Procedure Volumes: A confluence of aggressive investment in healthcare, ageing population and increasingly sedentary lifestyles has propelled rapid growth in surgical procedure volumes driven by cardiovascular and gastrointestinal procedures.

Ongoing government reform continues to change the healthcare sector in China, with basic coverage achieved for 96% of the population through existing and new healthcare facilities in urban and rural areas. This increased access, as well as affluence and awareness on the part of citizens, is expected to drive strong growth in surgical procedure volumes in China; however, coverage remains uneven in rural areas and out-of-pocket spending accounts for nearly 79% of private healthcare expenditure.

Evolving demographics and lifestyles are the other key factors impacting China's healthcare sector. In 2012, 13% of China's population was aged 65 years and older and this percentage is forecasted to reach 34% by 2050. An ageing population is already causing the country's disease profile to lean towards chronic diseases. In addition, better living conditions, sedentary lifestyles and increased obesity are driving the increasing incidence of conditions such as diabetes and heart problems even among younger people.

Cardiovascular and gastrointestinal procedures contribute to the bulk of surgeries performed in Chinese hospitals, along with obstetrics and gynecology procedures such as caesarean sections and abortions. In 2011, the number of cardiovascular and peripheral vascular surgical procedures was estimated to be approximately 2.5 million procedures. These procedures are expected to grow at an annual rate of 15.6% reaching over five million procedures by 2016. The number of obstetrics and gynecology procedures is expected to reach 31 million by 2016, an annual rate of increase of 9%. The influence of changing lifestyles and growing affluence is demonstrated by the demand for aesthetic procedures which are increasing fast and are forecast to reach 4.5 million procedures by 2016.
