India Surgical Procedure Volume 2011
Report #CS260IN -
February 2013

India Surgical Procedure Volumes: A rapidly urbanizing population with improving access to healthcare and increasingly sedentary lifestyles has led to significant growth in surgical procedure volumes driven by cardiovascular and obstetrics and gynecology procedures.

Home to a population of 1.2 billion, India has one of the world's fastest growing economies despite the economic recession of 2008. The country continues to experience rising demand for higher-quality and specialized healthcare facilities driven by a large population with increasing healthcare access and lifestyle changes. In recent years new healthcare facilities have mushroomed particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 cities to serve a rapidly urbanizing population. The government has increased the healthcare budget allocation by 15% to expand the rural health centre network, which serves over 400 million Indians subsisting below the poverty line.

The private sector continues to account for over 75% of total health spend in India and health insurance coverage is rising with awareness, affluence and healthcare costs. There are government plans to increase public health expenditure from 1.4% to 2.5% of GDP by 2017 and eventually to introduce universal health insurance. Besides uneven affordability, a chronic shortage of surgeons and nurses is another key barrier to a greater increase in the number of facilities, as well as surgical procedure volume growth.

India is undergoing a gradual transition from infectious to chronic diseases as the population grows older, richer and more urbanized. There has been an increasing incidence of "lifestyle" diseases as well as cancers; however the bulk of India's surgical procedure volumes are cardiovascular and obstetrics and gynecology procedures. An estimated 1.2 million cardiovascular and peripheral vascular surgical procedures were performed in India in 2011 and are forecast to reach 2.3 million in 2016, an annual growth rate of 14%. Obstetrics and gynecology procedures, including caesarean sections and abortions, are forecast to increase from approximately 8.5 million in 2011 to 17 million in 2016, an annual rate of 14%. In addition, there were significant volumes of general surgical and orthopedic procedures performed, and an increasing demand for aesthetic procedures as the middle class continued to expand.
