Japan Surgical Procedure Volume 2011
Report #CS262JP -
March 2013

Japan Surgical Procedure Volumes: Relatively low surgical procedure volumes driven by cardiovascular and spine procedures.

With a population of 128 million, Japan is one of Asia's most developed nations with one of the best healthcare systems. The healthcare expenditure per head is almost ten times that of China due to the universal health coverage in Japan which allows for easy and affordable access to treatment. Private expenditure on health contributes only 17% to the total health expenditure, the second lowest in Asia after Brunei.

Japan is regarded as one of the healthiest nations in the world; for a population more than twice that of South Korea, its surgical procedure volumes are only about 30% higher. Out of the 4.8 million surgical procedures performed in 2011, ophthalmology and orthopedics had the largest volumes, while spine and cardiovascular procedures have the highest growth rates. Overall, surgical procedure volume growth is estimated at 1.8%, in line with Japan's GDP growth.

The country is, however, straining under the burdens of a rapidly ageing demographic which is currently estimated at 32% of the total population. This trend is driving the demand for old age-related procedures such as cataract surgery and hip and knee replacements. In addition the growth of the middle class worldwide has led to better living conditions and sedentary lifestyles driving the incidence of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension even among younger populations and Japan is no exception to this development.
