South Korea Disease Incidence & Prevalence Report
Report #CS304SK -
June 2013

South Korea Disease Incidence and Prevalence: Non-communicable diseases form the bulk of the disease burden due to urban lifestyles and the ageing population

Despite South Korea's low birth rate, its population has recently increased past 50 million and the country has an urban population of 83%. South Korea's economy is ranked 15th in the world in terms of GDP and it is expected that GDP will continue to grow over the next few years. With healthcare currently accounting for approximately 6% of GDP healthcare spending is expected to increase in the next few years too.

South Korea has one of the highest smoking and alcohol consumption rates in the Asia Pacific region. This, along with the easy accessibility of fast food and snacks that are high in fat and salt content, means that the country's obesity rate is slowly on the rise. Thus, it is no surprise that chronic diseases form the bulk of the disease burden in South Korea.

Due to the large proportion of the population aged 65 and over, ophthalmic diseases such as age-related macular degeneration are highly prevalent in South Korea. In fact, cataracts and hypertension are two of the most prevalent diseases in the country. Diseases of the circulatory system are the top major cause of death in South Korea followed by cancer, in particular thyroid cancer is a significant health problem in South Korea and has the highest incidence among all forms of cancer.
