Brazil Surgical Procedure Volume 2011
Report #CS500BZ -
March 2012

Brazil Surgical Procedure Volumes: More than 4.6 Million surgical procedures in 2010 with a forecasted growth rate of 9% per annum through 2016

Brazil has one of the largest economies in the world and a population of nearly 190 million people. While healthcare is a right for all its citizens, Brazil’s per person public health expenditure is low even when compared to other South American countries such as Argentina and Uruguay. Once viewed as a young country, the Brazilian population is aging rapidly and the number of elderly people reached 21 Million in 2009. By 2050 at least 30% of the Brazilian population will at least 50 years old and average life expectancy will reach 81 years of age.

Brazil is currently facing some key healthcare challenges including trying to meet the medical needs of a large population with a limited number of hospitals. The private sector has developed rapidly in Brazil to meet this demand and, as a result, the Brazilian healthcare system today is a complex network of complementary and competitive service providers and purchases. The disease profile in the country has changed with an increased incidence of chronic diseases. Brazil is also combating a high prevalence of deadly diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

Brazil has built a strong reputation for its medical care, particularly in areas such as plastic surgery and neurosurgery, where Brazil has been able to attract a large volume of medical tourists. Surgical procedure volumes are affected by factors such as demographic and disease profile changes, government funding of surgeries (particularly elective), and social and cultural trends such as attitude towards plastic surgery and caesarean sections. In 2010, the total number of surgeries in Brazil reached 4.6 million with general surgeries accounting for approximately one third of that total. The growth rate for surgical procedures varies greatly with particularly high growth rates forecast for peripheral vascular surgery and ophthalmic procedures such as cataract surgeries.
