Argentina Surgical Procedure Volume 2011
Report #CS501AG -
July 2012

Argentina Surgical Procedure Volumes: More than 1.1 Million surgical procedures in 2010 with a forecasted growth rate of over 10% per annum through 2016.

Argentina has a population of 39.8 million with almost one-third of that total living in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Often thought of as having a young population, Argentina’s elderly population has grown in the last 30 years from less than 7% to more than 10% of total population. In Buenos Aires, more than 17% of the population is aged 65 or older. While many Latin American countries still have demographic patterns typical of the developing world – high birth rates, low life expectancy, a young population – the Argentine Republic is well on its way to completing a demographic transition to that of a more developed nation.

Despite reform efforts during the 1990s, the Argentine health sector still exhibits serious structural flaws that result in inequities across provinces in terms of health status and access, as well as health service financing. Recent economic, political and social crises exacerbated these problems, resulting in a sharp decrease in health insurance coverage and access to services and medications. In turn, this has led to an increase in demand in the public hospital network, often beyond the public hospitals’ capacity and resource availability. Despite these issues, Argentina has established itself as a medical tourist hub in Latin America, driven partly by a drop in the exchange rate, which has made the country a very affordable destination.

Argentina has a strong legacy and reputation in surgical areas including plastic surgery, organ transplantation, and trauma surgery among others. In 2010 the total number of surgeries in Argentina reached an estimated 1.1 million, with general surgeries accounting for approximately one-third of total volume. The growth rate of surgical procedures varies greatly with particularly high growth rates forecast for age related procedures such as cardiovascular surgery and ophthalmic procedures such as cataract surgeries.
