Latin America Surgical Procedure Volume 2011
Report #CS503LA -
October 2012

Latin America Surgical Procedure Volumes: More than 12 Million surgical procedures in 2010 with a forecasted compound annual growth rate of 7.3% through 2016.

Latin America is defined as the region south of the United States with an area of approximately 21,069,500 km≤ and a population estimated at more than 590 million. Healthcare spending as a proportion of gross domestic product (GDP) varies throughout the region from a low of just 1.8% in Venezuela to a reported 8-9% in Colombia while Argentina spends 8% of GDP on healthcare spending compared to Brazilís 5.2%. Starting in the 1990s, Latin America began a wave of healthcare sector reform. Fiscal constraints, demographic and epidemiological pressures and the demand for more efficient health care have prompted governments to make sweeping changes not only in financing but also in the delivery of health services. The scope and pace of these reforms vary country by country.

The region has large disparities in income and other socioeconomic determinants of health. National health statistics in Latin America have shown improvement over the past 35 to 50 years for almost all health indicators, including life expectancy, infant mortality, the incidence of many communicable diseases and vaccination coverage; however, although general health has improved, gains in health status have not been made equally among various socioeconomic groups. This is true particularly for Peru, Venezuela and Columbia where it is estimated that at least 45% of the population is not included in current healthcare schemes.

The most common health issues affecting Latin America include communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Non-contagious diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular illnesses and diabetes also affect the region as many of the larger countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Mexico face aging population and changes in lifestyles. The growth rate of surgical procedures varies greatly with particularly high growth rates forecast for age related procedures including cardiovascular surgeries and ophthalmic procedures such as cataract surgeries. In 2010, the total number of surgeries in Latin America reached 12 Million, with general surgeries and gynecologic/obstetrics surgeries accounting for the majority of total volume with the majority of surgical procedures performed in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.

The data within this report includes surgical procedures performed in countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela but excluding the Caribbean countries (unless otherwise stated above).
