China’s Anti-Cancer Drug Market Report 2008
Report #DHP9000 - December 2008

According to the Chinese Ministry of Health (MOH), there are 2.127 million Chinese patients with newly diagnosed tumors (both benign and malignant) each year; among which 1.06 million were newly diagnosed cancer patients. Cancer has become the leading cause for mortality in both urban and rural China. The cancer mortality rate of urban Chinese residents was 140.47/100,000 (21.82% of all urban deaths); the cancer mortality rate of rural Chinese residents was 111.57/100,000 (16.50% of all rural deaths), according to the national statistics data.

In the Chinese hospital drug market, sales of anti-cancer drugs have rose steadily in recent years. During 2003-2005, the annual compound growth rate of anti-cancer drug sales was approximately 24.53%. In 2006, due to the national campaign on anti-commercial bribery as well as other related government policies, the market growth of anti-cancer drugs slowed down to 11.10%. However, the growth of the anti-cancer drug market regained its momentum and reached a 22.24% annual growth rate in 2007. 2007’s total market size for anti-cancer drugs was RMB 25.45 billion RMB (USD 3.63 billion at a 7:1 USD:RMB exchange rate).

This report systemically analyzes the Chinese anti-cancer drug market. All drug data are based on hospital drug prescription and drug purchasing data from the hospital data monitor system that the China Nan Fang Institute of Medical and Economic Information has developed and maintained (Nan Fang Institute is a direct subsidiary of the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration SFDA). Sampled hospitals are from major Chinese cities across different geographic locations, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xian, Shenyang, Harbin and Zhengzhou, covering significant percentages of all hospitals in these regions.

This China Anti-cancer Drug Market Report is a must-have for all levels of decision makers in pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, healthcare investing companies and healthcare consulting companies. These unique drug prescription and utilization data can provide valuable information for new product development, marketing and strategic planning functions for pharmaceutical companies.
