China Senile Dementia Drug Market Report 2008
Report #DHP900
5 - March 2009

It is conservatively estimated that there are at least six million Chinese Senile Dementia (SD) patients, a category that includes vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia patients. By the year 2025 there will be approximately 250 million Chinese people aged 60 years or older of which it is forecast that there will be almost 10.1 million senile dementia patients. With the growing number of patients, sales of senile dementia drugs in the Chinese hospital market have risen dramatically since 2003 when the annual growth rate was 4.7% to a growth rate of 20.7% in 2007. This has lead to the market almost doubling in value since 2003 with annual sales of dementia drugs in 2007 of over RMB 6 Billion (approximately USD 1 Billion).

This new report thoroughly analyzes the Chinese dementia drug market. All of the drug data are based on hospital drug prescription and drug purchasing data from the hospital data monitoring system that the China Nan Fang Institute of Medical and Economic Information has developed and maintained (China Nan Fang Institute is a direct subsidiary of the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration, the SFDA). Sampled hospitals are from major Chinese cities across different geographic locations, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xian, Shenyang, Harbin and Zhengzhou and cover significant percentages of all hospitals in these regions. The comprehensive hospital utilization data of major dementia drugs provides a clear picture of the competitive landscape of the Chinese dementia drug market and the market potential for both products that are already marketed in China or those shortly to be launched in the Chinese marketplace. Market shares for all of the major competitors, including multinational and Chinese pharmaceutical companies and their major dementia products, are presented within this meticulously-researched report.
